Jake Clarke-Salter has already proven he has sbo ninja the stomach for a fight by choosing a loan move to Sunderland.

That’s the view of Black Cats skipper John O’Shea, who could find himself lining up alongside the on-loan Chelsea defender when Sunderland visit Cardiff City this weekend.

England Under 20 international Clarke-Salter became Chris Coleman’s first signing as Sunderland manager this week when he joined until the end of the season.

Coleman wants to bring in young, hungry, players who are willing to fight for the cause and who have a point to prove, as he seeks to bolster his squad for the relegation battle ahead.

And with clubs including Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City having been linked with the highly-rated 20-year-old earlier this season, O’Shea says the fact he has chosen to join Sunderland is a sign that he is not afraid of taking on a challenge.

“He trained on Tuesday, and he was very positive,” said O’Shea.

“Great vocally, technically he looks to be a very good talent and let’s just sbo ninja let him settle in and enjoy the experience.

“I remember the first couple of loans I had, it can be daunting.

“But he has come from a massive club and he is willing to come to Sunderland and fight to keep us up, that’s a huge positive because he will have had other options.”

O’Shea has been the linchpin of Sunderland’s defence this season, particularly since Coleman took over and began playing with three centre-backs.

Sunderland’s squad has been depleted through injuries and that meant that the 36-year-old had to play four games in nine days over the Christmas and New Year period, but the addition of Clarke-Salter will give Coleman another defensive option and potentially allow O’Shea to take a breather.

O’Shea said: “Anyone who comes in will have a chance to play if they can maintain sbo ninja the level of performance and that will be crucial.”
